Generalized Anxiety Disorder Treatment
Generalized Anxiety Disorder is characterized by persistent and severe anxiety and worry. The person is worried about “everything and anything”. Their worries are not proportional to the severity or to the likelihood of the feared event. They may worry about work problems, household chores, the health or safety of loved ones, their future or the future of family members, etc.
They have a very difficult time controlling their worry which highly interferes with their lives and their possibility of experiencing joy, relaxation and contentment. Somatic symptoms are frequent and include muscle tension, sleep problems, urinary frequency, diarrhea, dry mouth, and clammy hands. They often also experience depression.
Most sufferers of Generalized Anxiety Disorder indicate that they have had chronic worry all their lives. Their chronic anxiety and worry usually increases during stressful times in their lives (e.g. a recent move, being laid off).
The most effective treatment for Generalized Anxiety Disorder is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. This treatment will provide patients with helpful techniques that will lead to a decrease in their distress in a relatively short time.
